Roof Damage After Severe Weather

Hurricane Florence came ashore near Wrightsville Beach on September 14, 2018, the National Hurricane Center reported. The National Weather Service in Wilmington logged a 105 mph gust at Wilmington International Airport (ILM), the strongest there since Hurricane Helene in 1958, and 23.02 inches of rain, the biggest rain event in the city's records. Over 90 percent of New Hanover County lost power.

Hurricane Fran, on September 5, 1996, left some damage at 75 percent of Wilmington homes, the NWS found. Smaller systems count too: Idalia's 100 mph EF-1 tornado on Myrtle Grove Road (August 30, 2023) tore aluminum cornice from a home, and a Chantal tornado damaged trees and roofs in Kings Grant, east of the airport, on July 6, 2025.

Rain alone does damage too. On September 16, 2024, Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight dropped 20.81 inches on Carolina Beach, close to a 1-in-1,000-year event, per the NWS. Wind-driven rain pushes water under worn shingles and weak flashing.

Where Storm Damage Repair Fits

  • Missing or creased shingles. Tabs a gust folded back may have lost their seal.
  • Fresh stains or drips. A new ceiling mark after sideways rain often traces back to flashing or a lifted edge.
  • Limbs on the roof. Even one that slid off can crack shingles or puncture the deck.
  • Bent gutters or drip edge. Metal pulled loose at the eaves lets water run behind the fascia.
  • Bruised or cracked shingles. Hail is less common here than wind but can still leave marks.

Check from the yard. About one in five New Hanover County residents is 65 or older, and a wet roof is risky for anyone.

What Storm Damage Repair Typically Costs

Step by Step

  1. Send a request. One independent local roofer gets your details and calls to set a time.
  2. The damage gets documented. Photos, measurements and notes separate storm damage from older wear.
  3. You choose the scope. Repair, partial re-roof or full replacement is your call after reading the written estimate.

What You Can Expect

Take your time. Ask any roofer for proof of liability insurance, a local address, references, an itemized contract, written warranties and, because the coast is a high-wind design area, how a new roof would be fastened. A $40,000-plus job needs a general contractor license, which the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors lets you look up.

How an Insurance Claim Usually Works

The claim stays between you and your insurance company. This site never files, manages or negotiates claims; the roofer's part ends at documenting damage and writing an estimate.

Many coastal policies carry a separate named-storm or hurricane deductible, normally a percentage of dwelling coverage, shown on your declarations page. You pay that deductible yourself; treat any contractor's offer to cover or skip it as a warning sign.

If the insurer turns the roof claim down, North Carolina law gives you five business days from that denial to cancel a residential roof contract. In that window the roofer can't begin work or collect money, except for emergency repairs. See the North Carolina roofing rules.

Before You Book

Will the roofer talk to my insurance company for me?

No. The roofer can inspect, photograph, measure and write an estimate, and you are free to pass all of that along. Arguing over the amount or settling the claim is not the roofer's role. Coverage questions belong with your insurer or your agent, and the decisions stay yours.

The roof looks fine from the street. Is a check still worth it?

It can be. A strong gust can break the seal under a shingle without tearing it off, and the leak may wait for the next heavy rain. Book a look whenever it suits you; this site sets no deadline of any kind.

Is a tarp worth putting on before the inspection?

Often, yes. Stopping water early protects decking, insulation and ceilings. A roofer can tarp an opening as an emergency repair, which is also the exception to the five-day waiting rule after a denial. Photograph the damage before the tarp goes on and keep the receipt.

Does hail damage roofs around Wilmington?

It can, though hail is a minor cause of roof damage here next to wind and wind-driven rain. If a hard thunderstorm dents your gutters or vents, mention it in your request so the roofer checks the shingles closely too.
